African Originals Launches Mainstream Dry Cider in Kenya

African Originals, the award-winning Kenyan-based cider, spirits and soft drinks company, has launched KO Dry Cider – a crisp new dry cider in 330ml bottles and 500ml cans that will compete directly with the mainstream beer category.

Made in Kenya at Africa Originals cidery in Nairobi, KO Dry Cider is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to tap into changing consumer preferences in Kenya. Since 2020 the country’s cider category has grown by over 200% in volume, while beer volumes have seen a compound annual growth rate of just 1% from 2018 to 2023.

African Originals’ growth has been driven by its appeal to both men and women aged 28 to 40 who are looking for bolder local flavours and vibrant brands that reflect their lifestyle and identity.

The launch comes amid strong growth momentum for African Originals. In April, the company became the first gin and cider brewer in Africa to achieve B Corp certificationunderscoring its commitment to social and environmental impact. In the same month, it also launched Kenya’s first locally produced ready-to-drink (RTD) gin and tonic, meeting rising demand for premium convenience.

The company’s cider brands have also been successfully introduced to the Ugandan market, further expanding its East African footprint. “KO Dry Cider is our first truly mainstream cider, crafted specifically to appeal to beer drinkers who are looking for something different,” said Alex Chappatte, Founder and CEO of African Originals. “As the cider category grows and consumer tastes shift, we see a clear opportunity to challenge the dominance of beer with a locally made, flavour-forward alternative.”

The launch marks a new chapter for African Originals, as it expands into the heart of the everyday drinking occasion with a product that it says is proudly Kenyan and built for scale.

KO Dry Cider is available in retail stores, e-commerce platforms, wines & spirits shops, beer gardens and local bars across Kenya. Its design features recyclable glass and can packaging, and bold green apple and racetrack motifs that symbolise freshness, craftsmanship, and movement.
