Aga Khan University Hospital has emerged as first runners up at the 2025 Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Energy Awards, in recognition of its outstanding efforts in reducing carbon emissions through the adoption of renewable energy solutions.

The Hospital was honoured for two key green energy projects established in 2022, a solar power plant and a biomass boiler, which have significantly reduced its reliance on fossil fuels and lowered its overall carbon footprint.

“Our solar plant has reduced our reliance from the National grid and helped the hospital in offsetting upwards of 124,000Kwh from the National grid annually, a capacity we are looking at expanding. This has reduced an average of 96,000 kgs of carbon emissions yearly,” said Aga Khan University Hospital CEO, Rashid Khalani.

The transition from diesel-powered boiler to a biomass boiler in 2023 has also reduced the hospital’s annual consumption of diesel by 860,000 litres. The utilization of briquettes and other waste sources has resulted into an estimated saving of more than 2000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.

These emissions, monthly, are equivalent to driving back and forth between Nairobi and Mombasa over 700 times in an average sized car.

The KAM Energy awards recognize and celebrate organizations that have achieved significant energy savings and cost reductions through the implementation of energy-efficient practices and technologies.
