Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old Mexican TikTok star, was fatally shot while livestreaming from her beauty salon in a suburb of Guadalajara, in what police have described as an execution-style killing.

Marquez, known for her vibrant beauty and lifestyle videos that garnered hundreds of thousands of views, was streaming from her salon when a man entered and opened fire, according to the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office.

A screen recording of the livestream, which has since spread online, captures the moment the man, reportedly posing as a gift-bearer, approached Marquez before shooting her at close range.

This happened on Tuesday in Zapopan, a stronghold of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel that is one of Mexico’s most violent drug trafficking groups. However, state security coordinator Roberto Alarcon said there is no evidence linking the killing to organised crime.

Thus, the motive remains unclear, and the suspect is still at large, authorities said.

Marquez’s killing has been classified as a femicide, a gender-based murder, adding to Mexico’s grim tally of roughly 10 women and girls killed daily, according to United Nations data.

Zapopan mayor Juan Jose Frangie expressed outrage, calling the murder “terrible” and noting that the Tiktoker had not reported any prior threats to authorities.

“A femicide is the worst thing,” he said.

Police are looking at security camera videos and asking people who saw anything to help them find the person responsible.
