Passengers on ENA Coach in Nairobi have helped a woman deliver her baby after she went into labour while on the bus.

The public transportation company reports that the mother started having contractions on Wednesday as the bus was starting its journey on the Nairobi–Nyamira–Kendu Bay route.

Geoff Mokaya was seated right across from the woman. Mokaya says the woman yelled, “The baby is coming.”

Thankfully, a woman with experience in childbirth came from the back of the bus and helped lay the expectant mother on the floor.

Passengers quickly informed the driver, who pulled the bus over and joined in the effort to ensure a safe delivery.

Another woman joined in to assist, and the baby was born just seconds later.

One passenger wrote on social media, “I am on the bus, and I have never seen such teamwork. The driver deserves a medal, along with his crew. The lady with glasses from the picture is a qualified nurse, judging by how she handled the emergency. Well done to her. ENA Coach, truly exemplary!”

The bus company later announced that the mother and newborn were taken to a hospital after the delivery on their bus, with registration number KDK 035U.

“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our crew and fellow passengers for their incredible support and swift response during the journey,” the company said. “May the newborn be blessed with a joyful and healthy life.”

Giving birth in Kenyan buses does happen from time to time. In 2017, a Modern Coast Express crew helped a mother give birth on their bus to Mombasa, while in 2020, another baby was born on a bus from Nakuru, at Makindu Hospital in Makueni.
