Three primary school students have died from their injuries following a morning accident at Kibuon, Nyakach, along the Kisumu-Kisii Road.

Laurinus Odinga, the Nyakach OCPD, said the victims were all pupils from Ober Boys’ Boarding Primary School in Kasipul Kabondo Constituency, who were heading home for the April holidays after school closures.

The incident, which also claimed the life of the conductor, occurred when a Nissan matatu they were travelling in collided with a stalled sugarcane tractor belonging to one of the sugar factories in the region, he said.

“The area has a sharp bend, and the driver of the PSV crashed into the trailer without realising, killing four passengers,” the OCPD stated.

The bodies have since been transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Kisumu for preservation and further proceedings.

Odinga confirmed that 14 other pupils sustained injuries due to the impact and are currently receiving treatment at Nyabondo Mission Hospital.

The police boss said the vehicle had picked up the pupils from their school as part of an arrangement with the school management and was meant to drop them off in Kisumu.

In the wake of this tragedy, authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition to prevent such accidents.
