Earlier this year, President William Ruto announced plans to construct over 400 modern markets nationwide to strengthen the agricultural sector and drive economic growth.

Among the markets is the Diani Modern Market, which promises to reolutionalise the lives of residents not only in Kwale, but the larger coastal area.

Launched in July 2024 by President William Ruto as a collaboration between the Kwale County government and the national government, the iconic project boasts of key amenities including smart stores, spacious storage facilities, and dedicated spaces for breastfeeding mothers.

Unlike the previous market where traders operated in cramped, outdoor conditions, the new modern market’s design optimizes natural lighting to reduce energy costs and has sufficient space for traders and buyers.

“Before (Diani) Modern Market, we used to sell in the open sun at Ibiza. The place was very squeezed to our inconvinience. When we were moved from Ibiza to this place (Diani Modern Market) I have seen a lot of changes. My business has expanded after I got a bigger and better place,” says one of the traders.

The market contains the market, halls for taining traders and smart stalls with big storage space.

The construction of the market has also provided employment for the locals both directly and indirectly, by employing casual labourers and through supply of materials which are sources locally.

“We have high hopes that the new modern markets would bring much-needed jobs and economic growth to the areas they will be located,” Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani said during the launch last year, adding that it would be a relief to traders who are desperate for ways to enhance their businesses.
