From Teller to Bank Director: The Rise of Hannah Mbugua in Corporate Kenya

Family Bank has appointed three independent non-executive directors as it moves to strengthen its position in the market. The three are Hannah Mbugua, Prof. Winnie Nyamute, and Peninah Kariuki.

An interesting pick is Hannah Mbugua. According to her profile, she joined Family Bank before it even became a bank, as a teller 34 years ago, and has worked her way up in the corporate world. “She joined Family Finance Building Society in 1990 as a teller, growing through the ranks and serving in various capacities. Before she left Family Bank in 2020, she was a Senior Corporate Branch Manager,” Family Bank says.

Now she returns as a director, a senior role that places her strategically in terms of influencing strategy and growth for her former employer. In a free world where education and hard work are rewarded, nothing can stop anyone from rising through the ranks. Here below are full profiles of the new  Family Bank directors.

HANNAH NJERI MBUGUA – INDEPENDENT NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Hannah is a seasoned banker with over 30 years of banking experience. She has an extensive track record working with cross-functional teams, strategy formulation and execution, and people management.

She joined Family Finance Building Society in 1990 as a teller, growing through the ranks and serving in various capacities. Before she left Family Bank in 2020, she was a Senior Corporate Branch Manager.

Hannah holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Sciences from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). She has obtained several certifications including a programme on Leadership, Ethics, and Corporate Accountability from Harvard Business School.

Hannah is passionate about transforming the lives of communities, entrenching sustainable business practices and empowering young people. She is an active member of Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB) and Kenya Institute of Management (KIM).

She is currently a HR and Strategy consultant at Boma Mabati Factory Ltd and a Director at Certified Steel Mills Ltd.

PROF. WINNIE IMINZA NYAMUTE – INDEPENDENT NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Prof. Winnie Nyamute is an accounting professional with over 30 years’ experience. She is a professor in Finance and Accounting at the University of Nairobi. Previously, she served as a lecturer at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. She began her career as a Finance Officer at Kenya Water Institute.

She holds a PhD in Business Administration, an MBA in Finance and a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting. She is a Certified public Accountant and a fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAO She’s a member of the Association of Women Accountants of Kenya. Institute of Directors Kenya and Kenya Institute of Management.

Winnie currently serves on the Board of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and Acorn Investment Management Ltd. She brings a wealth of experience to the board, having served as a Director on the Board of the Nairobi Securities Exchange where she was the Chair of the Board Audit & Risk Committee, She is a former Director at Sameer Africa Plc and has just concluded her term on the Board of Trustees of KCA University.

PENINAH WANJIRA KARIUKI – INDEPENDENT NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Peninah has over 35 years of professional experience working in various capacities Within the banking and finance industry.

She began her career at the Central Bank of Kenya and rose through the ranks to Research Manager. She also served as Assistant to the Senior Resident Representative of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Nairobi.

She joined the African Development Bank (AfDB) and worked as Country Economist for many countries across the continent. Subsequently, she rose to senior positions at AfDB including Country Manager of the Sierra Leone Country Office, and Lead policy Advisor in the Office of the president of the Bank in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

She holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Development Economics from the University of Sussex, England; a Masters of Philosophy in Development Economics from the University Of Cambridge, England; and a Bachelor Of Arts in Economics from the university of Nairobi.
