Kenya Power has launched its sustainability strategy that provides a roadmap for the entrenchment of sustainable business operations.
The sustainability strategy will drive the implementation of measures to reduce environmental carbon footprint, prioritisation of inclusivity and well-being of the company’s stakeholders, responsible utilization of resources, and upholding of corporate and ethical practices.
The strategy also identifies key initiatives that will enable Kenya Power to take action towards mitigating climate change. These initiatives include the promotion of the adoption of e-mobility and e-cooking technologies, enhancing clean energy sourcing and the development of eco-friendly infrastructure.
“The Sustainability Strategy will guide us to anchor our operations as a responsible corporate citizen on reliable short-term and long-term activities that will enable us to remain responsive to emerging challenges such as climate change,” said Kenya Power’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror. “Our goal is to build a strong, resilient, and sustainable energy ecosystem that not only safeguards and protects the environment, but also caters to the needs of the communities within which we operate.”
The Chairman of the Kenya Power Board of Directors, Ms Joy Brenda Masinde, underscored the importance of integrating sustainable business practices and noted that the Board would provide guidance and leadership to ensure that the company upholds sustainability for the benefit of all its stakeholders.
“We aim to ensure that our pursuit of economic goals does not compromise the well-being of future generations. This alignment is not merely a strategic imperative but a moral obligation that will significantly enhance our long-term competitiveness and operational resilience,” she said.
Being the country’s electricity distribution company, Kenya Power’s has footprint in all regions across the country. Its business operations are heavily dependent on the environment and human resources. For this reason, Dr Siror said, the company recognises its vital responsibility to ensure that it does not deplete or negatively exploit resources thereby guaranteeing continuity for future generations.
The tenets of the Sustainability Strategy have been drawn from the United Nations Sustainable Development (SDG) Goal 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 13 on Climate Action, Goal 15 on Life on Land, Goal 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions and Goal 17 on Partnership for the Goals.
