President William Ruto has confirmed his nomination of Dorcas Oduor to be the next Kenya’s Attorney General, succeeding Justin Muturi, who was ousted when he dissolved the entire Cabinet earlier in July to pave the way for the formation of a “broad-based Government”.
The Executive Office of the President announced Tuesday the nomination of the current Secretary of Public Prosecutions at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) – who will, if confirmed by the National Assembly, become the first woman to hold the post of an Attorney General in Kenya.
“Senior Counsel Dorcas Oduor has vast legal experience spanning over thirty years of practice within the public sector,” Ruto said in a public statement, before detailing and praising her achievements.
He added: “In her long and distinguished career as a jurist who has contributed immensely to the development of law in Kenya through litigation, draughtsman and legal advisories, Senior Counsel Oduor has demonstrated unimpeachable integrity, impressive professional competence and steadfast commitment to the rule of law.”
Oduor is among prominent Kenyan lawyers Kalonzo Musyoka, Philip Murgor, Otiende Amollo and Martha Karua, who were conferred with the title ‘Senior Counsel’ by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2020.
She was admitted to the bar as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1992, having attained her Bachelor of Laws Degree in 1990 and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law in 1991.
