Stephen Mokogi Nyarenchi, a man facing charges of trespassing on a protected site, was released on bail on Monday after being arrested for breaking into the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi during the anti-Finance Bill protests on Tuesday, June 25.

Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi of Milimani Law Courts approved Nyarenchi’s release on a bail of Ksh2,000, which he paid in cash and walked out free in the afternoon pending case mentioning and further investigations.

Before the judge, Nyarenchi, who is the one allegedly seen in viral photos carrying the ceremonial mace which represents the authority of the August House, complained that the police had kept him in custody for over 24 hours since June 28, contravening his human rights.

He has been accused of entering the parliamentary compound by climbing over the fence along Parliament Road without lawful authority, but he denied the charges.

The prosecution, led by lawyer Virginia Kariuki, has listed three witnesses to testify during his trial.
