The Port of Mombasa saw its single-largest consignment of electric vehicles  arrive on November 29, 2022. 15 new electric buses were shipped in by BasiGo which has been piloting an electric bus transport service in Nairobi.

BasiGo in November raised $6.6 million with the goal of  reshaping mass transit on the country. Several EV startups have set up shop in the country over the past few years, with Kenya positioning itself as a green energy hub.

BasiGo is working with bus operators and owners in Nairobi to electrify their fleets. It also partners with banks to offer a pay-as-you-drive financing model.

The new buses will be sent to a final assembly facility in Mombasa before beng delivered to Nairobi for passengers to use.

Highlighting the shipment, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) noted that it was in line with the current administration’s promise to support green energy technologies including electric vehicles (EVs).

Power generator KenGen has already began acquiring EVs and is undertaking research to inform their plans in the space, as is monopoly power distributor Kenya Power.

They are keen on building infrastructure to support uptake of EVs in Kenya; such as an efficient charging network.

President William Ruto has also reiterated his administration’s commitment to invest in green technologies to beat climate change.
