WhatsApp has announced new updates that will give group admins more powers, even as the Meta-owned app rolled out Communities.

Communities on WhatsApp enable people to bring together separate groups under one umbrella with a structure that works for them. People can receive updates sent to the entire Community and easily organize smaller discussion groups on what matters to them.

Communities will also contain powerful new tools for admins, including announcement messages that are sent to everyone and control over which groups can be included.

“With Communities, we’re aiming to raise the bar for how organizations communicate with a level of privacy and security not found anywhere else. The alternatives available today require trusting apps or software companies with a copy of their messages – and we think they deserve the higher level of security provided by end-to-end encryption,” WhatsApp said in a blog post.

WhatsApp is also making a number of improvements to how groups work, whether or not they are part of a Community.

The chat app is introducing Polls, 32-person video calls and groups with up to 1024 users..

“Today we’re launching Communities on WhatsApp. It makes groups better by enabling sub-groups, multiple threads, announcement channels, and more. We’re also rolling out polls and 32-person video calling too. All secured by end-to-end encryption so your messages stay private,” Mark Zuckerberg, Meta CEO said.

WhatsApp is also introducing larger file sharing (up to 2GB from the current limit of 16MB), and admin delete, a feature that allows group admins to delete ‘unwanted’ messages sent to groups.
