John Methu Muhia (born February 14, 1991) is a Kenyan politician currently serving as the Senator for Nyandarua County, a position he has held since 2022.

Born and raised in Kinangop Constituency, one of the five constituencies that make up Nyandarua County, Methu graduated in 2017 with a degree in Political Science from Pwani University, where he had enrolled in 2013 after completing his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at Goshen High School in Nakuru.

Before his election to the Senate, Methu served in the Nyandarua County Assembly as Personal Secretary to the then Speaker, James Wahome Ndegwa, from 2018.

His political journey had begun a year earlier, though, with a failed attempt for the same Nyandarua Senate seat in 2017 under the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party, when he lost to Githiomi Mwangi, the county’s second senator.

In the 2022 General Elections, Methu vied under President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket after defeating Githiomi, also an ex-minister, and lawyer Kinyanjui Theuri in the primary elections.

To the surprise of many, he emerged victorious in the general election, receiving 185,337 votes. This made him the youngest person ever elected to the Senate at the age of 31, after Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, who joined the upper house at 32 in 2013.

Unlike other candidates who had significant financial support from long political or business careers, Methu depended on the goodwill of voters, even during the campaign period.

“Especially the local people, not the big people that you would expect; not the people that are sending you Ksh50,000 or Ksh100,000. There are people I went to campaign in their market, and the women offered to fundraise for me,” he recalls.

“I would want to promise the young people that I’ll be there to push the legislative agenda about the issues affecting them. I’ll be there, and I’ll be their champion and their ambassador. I’ll be there to even champion the issues that affect our county. Our county is unique,” he promised the electorate.

Senator

Senator Methu is Florence Mbugua’s husband, and they have at least one child, a firstborn daughter.

With no living parents, his extended family now consists of siblings and distant relatives after his father, Michael Maigo Waweru, passed away in December 2023 and his mother in 2018.
