The Widows Empowerment Program has marked a major milestone in Siaya County after convening 157 widow groups drawn from all 30 wards, underscoring growing confidence in the initiative’s mission to restore dignity, livelihoods and hope among vulnerable women.

The high turnout during the latest engagement reflected the expanding reach and credibility of the program, which continues to attract widows organised at the grassroots level.

During the event, participants received essential empowerment support, including rice, cooking oil, beans, sugar and fruit tree seedlings—interventions designed to meet immediate household needs while also promoting long-term food security and environmental conservation.

Organisers said the engagement also mobilised strong goodwill, with KSh11 million raised to support ongoing and future program activities.

The impact of the Widows Empowerment Program is increasingly visible across Siaya County. More than 10 widows have so far benefited from housing interventions that have replaced unsafe and deplorable living conditions with decent, dignified homes.

At the same time, over 300 orphans from widow-led households are currently sponsored to attend school, ensuring continued access to education and improved prospects for the future.

Youth empowerment remains a central pillar of the initiative. Through the program, 250 youths from Siaya County studying German at Tom Mboya University have received structured support, linking education to skills development and broader global employment opportunities.

Beyond Siaya, the program has continued to scale nationally, with active engagements in Uasin Gishu, Makueni, Kitui, Machakos, Embu, Meru, Nyeri and Kakamega counties. Plans are also underway to expand operations to Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa counties, extending the initiative’s footprint to the Coast region.

Organisers say the Widows Empowerment Program has emerged as a transformative model of social empowerment, addressing the interconnected challenges facing widows, orphans and youth while strengthening community resilience across the country.
