Renowned author David Maillu will lead a host of Kenyan authors who will grace the Nairobi Soma Festival taking place at the MacMillan Memorial Library.

Other authors at the week-long event that started on Monday 4th August include Empress Ciku Kimani-Mwaniki and Betty Kilonzo. Children’s authors Lorraine Malu, Tatiana Whitup, and Ray Mwihaki also feature at the book festival, among others.

“I get excited with events that encourage people to read books,” said Maillu. “We need to have more such events across Nairobi and its various suburbs in order to enhance a reading culture in the city. This should also be extended to the whole country.”

Maillu is the author of After 4.30, whose third edition was released by Mvua Press — an imprint of eKitabu — on 28 June. The classic, written in poetic form, was first published in 1974. A stage adaptation of the book was performed during the launch, directed by thespian Njache Mwaniki.

Maillu will be available to meet fans and sign books on the last day of the event, Saturday 9 August, from 2-4 pm. Empress Ciku, whose epic novel NaiRobbery Cocktail was released last November by Mvua Press, will be available for the same purpose on both Friday and Saturday.

The Nairobi Soma Festival has been organised by the Association of Published Authors Information and Resource Centre (ASPIRE) in collaboration with the Directorate of Library Services of the Nairobi County Government.

This year’s theme is “Tusome Pamoja”, which is a call for Nairobi residents to make use of public reading spaces. Mvua Press is supporting the event and will be offering its books at discounted prices.
