Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor John Barorot has resigned just days after Eldoret, the headquarters of the rich Rift Valley county, was upgraded to a city.

The announcement which was made today during a meeting with senior county staff at the Eka Hotel in Eldoret, attended by Governor Jonathan Bii, did not get many residents by surprise, especially given that Barorot had lately not been in great spirits with his boss. A week ago he was forced to dismiss rumours that he had resigned.

Mr Bii confirmed that he had resigned after securing a new role as Chief Executive Officer of an international ICT firm that will begin on September 1, 2024. Speaking to the media, Mr Barorot clarified that he has no differences with the governor as speculated but was pursuing other opportunities.

He noted he has been in the ICT world for the last 30 years. “It’s in the private sector but it has a catalytic role,” he said. “I go with my head high because of my passion. I have worked well with the governor and other employees.”

Mr Bii, the governor, praised Barorot for his service to the county and wished him success in his new role. He stated that his new position is a blessing to Uasin Gishu County. Speculation of his departure intensified when Barorot was notably absent from President William Ruto’s event last Thursday, where Eldoret was conferred with city status.
