As this new year unfolds, markets are increasingly anticipating rate cuts. This expectation arises because the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) reduced the benchmark rate (CBR) three times before the end of 2024. The cumulative reduction was nearly two percentage points, from 13% on June 5 to 11.25% in its final review in December. Consequently, deposit interest rates, including money market account rates, have been falling.

The highest money market account rate in 2025 is 16.61% annual percentage yield (APY), lower by 1.7% compared to the best MMF yield last year in July before the CBK had started lowering its policy rate. This APY is offered on the Cytonn Money Market Fund Account, which was the second-best at that time, with 18.34%, behind Etica MMF, which had a nominal rate of 18.36%.

Today, Etica ranks fourth overall on the list of best money market funds with the highest interest rates, offering a 15.90% interest rate, behind newcomer GulfCap Money Market Fund and the well-established Lofty Corban, which offer 16.25% and 16.26% APYs, respectively.

A money market account can be an ideal place to earn a competitive yield on your savings because they often have higher annual percentage yields (APYs) than traditional savings accounts.

Moreover, they are considered safe because they seek to provide stability in the value of investments and guarantee liquidity through exposure to different types of assets, all of which have a short maturity period.

However, like all investments, the value of MMF investments and the income from them can fall as well as rise, and returns are not guaranteed. Investors may not get back the amount originally invested.
