Arap Moi Primary School in Kajiado County has in the last three years registered tremendous growth academically since the introduction of the Solar Powered Internet School (SPIS) which is a Samsung Corporate Citizenship Project. The school which now boasts of over 2,000 pupils currently has experienced an average increase of 6% annually from a mean score of 264.91 in 2014 with great improvement in languages.
The SPIS initiative is able to utilise cloud technology innovation to enhance quality education in rural areas that are not covered by electricity grid by providing a technology-rich learning and teaching eco-system. The program focuses on deployment of ICT Infrastructure such as Samsung E-board, multi-purpose printer and tablets to enhance learning.
While updating officials from Korea who were on a fact-finding mission on the improvement of education at the school through the programme, the school headteacher Rhodah Kipkore, said the facility has greatly enhanced efficiency as all the teachers have been trained on the basic usage of computers and the Samsung Power Internet program as a whole.
“Class attendance has also significantly improved as pupils are eager to interact with the computers both for learning and research”, she added. She argues that the school intake has increased due to the presence of the SPIS. This year the school saw a population increase of 300 pupils and still growing signalling that indeed the SPIS program is a success” she added.
The school has benefited from 40 laptops, 20 Samsung tablets, four projectors and four all share cast dongles from the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), in partnership with Samsung Electronics East Africa, as part of a strategy to enhance the school’s capacity for digital education.
According to Samsung, these solutions are built with the intention of bringing hope to the people who use them. It enables Arap Moi Primary School and the greater community of Kajiado county and indeed Kenya, to have access to education using technology of the highest standard.
The SPIS is more learner-centred as opposed to teacher-centred. Teachers are able to research and get rich online content which they can then integrate with their class to improve the teaching process by giving better demonstrations and examples.
In order to monitor progress, learners cannot go online without a teacher’s permission. Teachers are also able to monitor what learners are doing on their laptops.

The project was implemented in partnership with KERIS for teacher training, monitoring and project evaluation and focuses on the deployment of ICT Infrastructure like the Samsung Interactive Whiteboard, commonly called E-board, the multi-purpose Samsung printer and Samsung laptops.
