Safaricom PLC has introduced four new millionaires under its Shangwe @25 promotion, raising the total number of winners to five since the campaign began two weeks ago.
The latest beneficiaries are Josephine Waswa from Bungoma, Bernice Mumo from Makueni, Abdi Dahir from Garissa, and Josephat Mwilaria from Athi River.
They join the first winner, 20-year-old Yvonne Wanjiku Kang’ara from Kiambu. Each of them has received one million shillings, along with an additional two hundred and fifty thousand shillings dedicated to a community project they choose.
In Bungoma, sugarcane farmer Josephine Waswa said the win felt unreal because it came from a very small airtime purchase. She described the moment she received her cheque as emotional and life-changing.
In Makueni, 26-year-old cosmetology graduate Bernice Mumo said the win came at a critical point in her life as she continues searching for stable employment. She had bought airtime and paid for her Wi-Fi using M-PESA when luck struck.
“I am still in shock. I always see people winning, but I never imagined I would one day be one of them.”
Bernice intends to use her community funds to construct and equip a laboratory at Mwalano Dispensary to reduce long travel distances for medical tests.
Garissa’s winner, 25-year-old turn boy Abdi Dahir, said he could hardly express the gratitude he felt after learning he had won. Being the main provider for his family made the news even more meaningful.
“Everyone in our family depends on me. I really don’t know what to say or how best to thank Safaricom for locating me.”
He said he regularly buys small credit to call customers and never imagined it would make him a millionaire.
“This win is life-changing for my family.” He plans to build his mother a house and support Sangailu Primary School with water tanks and desks.
In Athi River, 51-year-old businessman Josephat Mwilaria admitted he almost ignored the winning call due to a previous encounter with fraud. He only accepted it as genuine after visiting a Safaricom shop.
Josephat, who relies heavily on M-PESA for bill payments and business transactions, said he now plans to reinvest part of his prize into his business. He will direct his community project funds to Pillars of Hope Children’s Home, supporting them with food donations and school fees for selected children.
Safaricom says the Shangwe @25 promotion is designed to celebrate its 25th anniversary by giving back to customers across the country.
Prizes
Thousands of people are winning rewards daily and weekly, ranging from cash prizes to data bundles, devices, and business support tools.
Each week, more than 800 customers receive cash prizes of ten thousand, fifty thousand, or one hundred thousand shillings, contributing to over fifty thousand weekly winners. More than five million customers are expected to win across the entire promotion period, with a total of two hundred and fifty million shillings set aside for prizes.
To participate, customers simply need to transact on M-PESA, send money, redeem Bonga Points, purchase Safaricom products such as data or voice bundles, or subscribe to services like Home Fibre.
Merchants and M-PESA agents also qualify through transactions of one thousand shillings and above, including Buy Goods and Pochi La Biashara. The company says the promotion not only rewards individuals but also uplifts communities through the projects funded by each winner.
