Safaricom has partnered with Huawei to launch VybCall, Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service, allowing users to replace traditional caller tunes with short video clips.

The new feature makes Kenya the first country in Africa to launch a video ringback tone service, marking a major milestone in mobile entertainment and digital innovation.

With VybCall, Safaricom customers can personalise their caller experience by sharing short videos that play while someone waits for their call to be answered. The company says the feature is designed to give users more control and creativity in how they connect.

“At Safaricom, we are constantly exploring new ways to give our customers choice and control through targeted experiences,” James Maitai, Safaricom’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, said.

Adding;

“The launch of Kenya’s first Video Ring Back Tone service is one way we are transforming daily moments creatively, buttressing our commitment to innovation.”

VybCall is currently available on Safaricom Neon devices, select Samsung and Oppo phones, and Xiaomi’s Redmi A series, with Vivo devices expected to be supported by mid-2026. Customers can activate the service by dialling *860# on compatible phones or through the Safaricom App via vybcall.safaricom.com.

According to Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao, the service will open new opportunities for Kenya’s creative community.

“VybCall will help the amazing creatives in Kenya, which is just one of the many ways that Huawei works with our partners to develop innovative technologies which improve customer experience and drive economic growth,” he said.

The service also introduces new possibilities for content monetisation and business marketing, enabling brands and creators to turn caller waiting time into a space for engagement and advertising.

Safaricom says the launch reflects its continued investment in enhancing customer experiences and supporting Kenya’s growing digital ecosystem.

The company’s Skiza service, introduced nearly two decades ago, remains one of its most successful products. With the rise of short-form video content, VybCall represents the next evolution of how Kenyans connect, communicate, and create through their phones.
