President William Ruto has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will attend the second Africa Climate Summit, a high-level meeting bringing together Heads of State and Government to advance Africa’s leadership in climate action and green growth.
In a press statement released on Sunday, September 7, 2025, State House said the summit comes at a critical moment as African leaders seek to consolidate the gains made during the inaugural Africa Climate Summit held in Nairobi last year.
“Building on the 2023 Nairobi Declaration, which set Africa’s bold climate agenda, President Ruto will launch the report From Nairobi to Addis Ababa: Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership. The report reviews progress since the first Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, assesses current realities, and maps future pathways,” the statement read.
Ruto’s itinerary
The President is expected to unveil the report that takes stock of progress made since the first summit, highlights challenges, and points to possible solutions for the future.
By presenting the report, he will be setting the stage for a renewed climate agenda, drawing from past lessons while looking to the future.
Another key highlight of the trip will be the signing of the Cooperation Framework for the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII). This agreement will unite African governments, financiers, the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, and private sector players to pool resources and expertise for green growth.
“He will also witness the signing of the Cooperation Framework for the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII), bringing together African governments, financiers, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, and private sector actors,” the statement said.
The framework will provide a coordinated approach to mobilising investments and aligning efforts with key priorities on the continent.
“The framework will coordinate financial and technical support, mobilise investment, and align with key priorities such as the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa, AfCFTA, and the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa (AGIA). A Joint Project Preparation Facility, backed by financial institutions, will fast-track bankable green projects,” the release added.
President Ruto will also lead discussions in his role as chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change. He is expected to push for policies that will ensure fair resource valuation, equitable carbon pricing, and reforms that make it easier for countries to manage debt and climate risks.
“As chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), President Ruto will push for fair resource valuation, equitable carbon pricing, and financial reforms to ease debt and climate risks,” the statement said.
On the sidelines of the summit, the President will also take part in climate finance talks aimed at unlocking more investment while strengthening Africa’s role in shaping global financial reforms.
Beyond climate issues, President Ruto will address the Africa-CARICOM Summit, where he will emphasise reparatory justice, debt sustainability, and stronger transcontinental cooperation.
“Beyond the summit, he will address the Africa-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Summit on reparatory justice, debt sustainability, and transcontinental cooperation, alongside bilateral meetings to strengthen ties, expand trade, and advance joint action on global challenges,” the statement confirmed.
