Kenya and California have strengthened their partnership in innovation, clean energy, and artificial intelligence following a high-level meeting in Nairobi.
President William Ruto hosted a delegation from California led by State Secretary of Transportation Toks Omishakin, accompanied by U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Carla Benini and private sector representatives.
The visit underscored the growing ties between Kenya and California, which Ruto described as a key partner in driving sustainability, technology, and shared prosperity.
In a statement shared via his X account on Monday, August 11, the head of state noted that California’s leadership in technology and climate innovation complements Kenya’s vibrant Silicon Savannah, powered by a young and digitally skilled workforce.
“California’s leadership in technology and climate innovation, together with Kenya’s Silicon Savannah and our vibrant, young and digitally-skilled workforce, creates unmatched opportunities for collaboration. Kenya leads in climate action, with a 93% renewable energy grid, targeting 100% by 2030 and 100GW by 2040,” Ruto stated.
Kenya currently generates 93 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources and is working towards achieving 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030, with an ambitious goal of producing 100 gigawatts by 2040. Ruto said these milestones have positioned the country as a leader in climate action across Africa.
The discussions focused on advancing clean energy systems, smart agriculture, research, artificial intelligence, trade, and sustainable transportation.
Among the initiatives highlighted was the planned Africa Clean Transportation Centre of Excellence to be established in Nairobi, which will serve as a hub for promoting green mobility solutions across the continent.
The visit comes at a time when Kenya’s international partnerships are attracting attention. While the country has been expanding trade ties with China, including securing tariff reductions for tea, coffee, avocados, and other exports, Ruto emphasised that his administration is committed to building relationships that serve Kenya’s national interest. He said partnerships with both Western and Eastern nations are aimed at driving economic growth, innovation, and environmental sustainability.
