Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo has hailed Kenyan fans as the true heroes of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), saying their passion and discipline have set a new benchmark for football culture on the continent.
In a statement ahead of Saturday’s final at Kasarani Stadium, Dr Omollo praised the “12th Man Army” for transforming the tournament into a national spectacle both inside and outside the stadiums.
“If there was one undeniable champion of CHAN 2024, it was the fans,” he said. “They embodied discipline and passion throughout the tournament, turning up in record numbers, celebrating with energy, and doing so with remarkable order. This has set a new benchmark for football culture defined by discipline, unity, and pride.”
Dr Omollo has highlighted how fan zones in Baba Dogo, Mathare, Githurai, and the Central Business District became vibrant community hubs, attracting families, women, and children. Equipped with giant screens, seating, entertainment, and medical services, the spaces created safe and inclusive environments for thousands to share in the tournament.
Inside Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums, the atmosphere was electric. “Crowds thundered as Harambee Stars entered the field, while stands pulsed with rhythm and colour,” Dr Omollo said, adding that the scenes showcased Kenya as the heartbeat of the tournament.
The PS also noted that beyond the passion in the stands, CHAN 2024 had demonstrated East Africa’s organisational capacity. From upgraded stadiums in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Kampala to smooth security, ticketing, and broadcasting, the tri-nation hosting had proved a model for future continental tournaments.
Kenya, he said, had especially redefined its football identity. “For decades, we were seen as unconverted potential in African football. CHAN 2024 has changed that. We have shown that we can host, organise, and commercialise football at the highest level,” he remarked.
As Harambee Stars made history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time, Dr Omollo said their performance, combined with the fans’ support, captured the imagination of millions.
“With the exception of a few initial challenges, our supporters have shown that excitement can coexist with responsibility. This is a legacy we must carry forward,” he said.
Saturday’s final at Kasarani, Dr Omollo added, would not only crown Africa’s new CHAN champion but also seal Kenya’s place as a standard-setter in football hosting.
