Rallying Together For Breast Cancer Awareness

Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast tissue grow uncontrollably, leading to the formation of a tumour.

Some common symptoms of breast cancer include the presence of a lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area, changes in the size or shape of the breast, and unexplained pain in the breast or nipple. Other warning signs may include nipple discharge, especially if it is bloody, or skin changes on the breast, such as dimpling or redness. While these symptoms do not always indicate breast cancer, it is important to seek medical advice if any of these changes are noticed.

Though certain risk factors, such as age, genetics, and family history, cannot be controlled, individuals can take proactive steps to reduce their chances of developing breast cancer. Regular screening is one of the most important preventive measures. Mammograms, along with self-examinations, allow for the early detection of any irregularities. Women should follow their doctor’s guidance regarding the frequency of screenings, based on their age, risk factors, and family history.

Jubilee Health Insurance offers plans that cover annual general check-ups, which include breast cancer screenings, clinical exams, and mammograms. We believe that empowering individuals to access life-saving services can detect cancer in its earliest stages.

Living a healthy lifestyle can also help lower the risk of breast cancer. Maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, and keeping a healthy weight contribute to overall wellness and can reduce cancer risk. Research suggests that regular exercise can lower estrogenic and insulin levels in the body, both of which are linked to breast cancer development. Another way to reduce the risk is by limiting alcohol consumption. Studies have shown that even moderate alcohol intake can increase the likelihood of breast cancer. Reducing or eliminating alcohol can be an important preventive step.

Smoking is also linked to several types of cancer, including breast cancer. Quitting smoking benefits overall health and reduces cancer risk. For those with a family history of breast cancer, it is important to be aware of genetic predispositions. Discussing genetic testing with a healthcare provider can provide valuable information and may lead to increased surveillance or preventive measures. Additionally, women undergoing hormone replacement therapy should carefully weigh the risks and benefits with their doctor, as long-term use has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Through our Maisa Fiti program, we have witnessed firsthand the critical role that access to information plays in raising awareness on disease prevention and management, as well as the significant impact that physical activity has in promoting overall wellness.

Beyond personal health measures, collective support in the fight against breast cancer is vital. Raising awareness, participating in fundraising events, and advocating for improved healthcare resources all contribute to the cause. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to emphasize the need for better research, treatment options, and support services.

As we observe this month, we must remind ourselves that no one should journey through breast cancer alone. Whether through education, advocacy, or personal support, we can all play a part in helping those affected. Together, we can create a future where breast cancer is no longer a life-threatening disease.
