The government has released the detailed programme for the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, outlining a week-long series of events to honour the late statesman both in Nairobi and his Siaya County home.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said the arrangements had been slightly adjusted to accommodate logistical considerations, as Raila passed away while abroad.

“It was the wish of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga to be laid to rest within seventy-two hours of his passing. However, given that his demise occurred outside the country, certain logistical considerations and formalities will understandably affect the timelines,” Kindiki stated.

According to the official schedule, a Kenyan delegation will arrive in Mumbai at 1:00 a.m. to oversee the repatriation of the body. The plane carrying Raila’s remains will depart Mumbai at 2:00 a.m. and is expected to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 8:30 am on Thursday.

Upon arrival, the body will be received by President William Ruto, members of the Odinga family, and senior government officials before being escorted to the Lee Funeral Home.

At 12:00 noon, the body will be transferred to the Parliamentary Buildings in Nairobi’s Central Business District, where a public viewing will take place from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, allowing Kenyans to pay their final respects to the former Prime Minister.

On Friday, a State Funeral Service will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium, bringing together dignitaries, foreign heads of state, and citizens from across the country to celebrate Raila’s life and legacy.

On Saturday morning, Raila’s body will leave Nairobi for Kisumu, where residents will have an opportunity for public viewing before the cortege proceeds to his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County.

The final burial ceremony will take place on Sunday, 19 October 2025, in Bondo, conducted according to the rites and traditions of the Anglican Church, to which the late leader belonged.

Thousands of mourners, including international guests, are expected to attend the ceremonies as the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its most influential and transformative political figures.
