In an official announcement released by Qatar Airways, Hamad Al-Khater has been named as Group Chief Executive Officer effective immediately, replacing former chief Badr Al-Meer.
Al-Khater previously held the position of CEO of Hamad International Airport (HIA) as well as senior positions in QatarEnergy. During his time at HIA, Al-Khater was “responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of airport operations, while leading its strategic direction, operational excellence, infrastructure expansion, and the continuous enhancement of passenger experience,” the airline said in a statement.
“Qatar Airways Group extends its appreciation to Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer for his service. As we welcome Mr. Hamad Ali Al-Khater, we look forward to building on the strong foundations and expansive global network of Qatar Airways, anchored by our exceptional team in Qatar and around the world,” Qatar Airways’ statement quoted the Group Board of Directors Chairman Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, as saying.
“With this leadership transition, Qatar Airways Group reaffirms its commitment to delivering world-class experiences, reliability, and innovation to travelers around the globe,” the statement added.
Al-Meer had been appointed as Group CEO in November 2023 following the resignation of former chief Akbar Al Baker after a 27-year tenure. Prior to his appointment as the Gulf airline’s chief executive, Al-Meer also similarly held the position of HIA’s CEO.
During Al Meer’s leadership, the group acquired a 25 percent stake in Virgin Australia and a 25 percent stake in South Africa’s regional carrier Airlink, strengthening its global reach beyond its own routes.
Qatar Airways also became the first global airline and the first in the Middle East and North Africa to install super-fast satellite WiFi (Starlink) across its Boeing 777 fleet, improving onboard connectivity and passenger experience.
Qatar Airways also introduced “Sama,” a world-first conversational Artificial Intelligence digital cabin crew, as part of its push for digital transformation in passenger services.
