Many people use office internet to visit social media sites everyday and think that it is normal and allowed. Some bosses are just cool and would not mind as long as you still do your work.
But for Equity Bank Kenya Managing Director Polycarp Igathe, it can never be business as usual especially for employees who watch pornography in the office.
In a speech at an Equity Wings to Fly function on April 18, Mr Igathe talked about the benefits of being integral at the work place. While talking about this, he gave those who will benefit from the scholarship programme this year an example of his own previous employees who lacked integrity at the work place. He fired them for watching pornography using office internet instead of actually working.
“I have seen and even fired grown up people in companies who come to spend their time on computers watching pornography,” Mr Igathe said. He, however, did not state whether the employees he fired were from Equity Bank Kenya.
In his career, Igathe has held managerial posts at Africa Online, Coca-Cola, East African Breweries Limited, HACO, Tiger Brands Group and Vivo Energy. Be sure that one of these companies has had employees fired because of watching pornography at work.
“My work as Managing Director is to watch the sites you go to and I tell the IT people to inform me how many people have gone to pornography sites,” Igathe added.
It is one thing being fired for non-performance or redundancy but being dismissed because of watching porn is another story.
However, it is something that can be easily avoided by watching it on your phone or laptop at home though some find it difficult to avoid the sites due to addiction.

But in the event that you get a chance to work for Igathe, be sure to overcome your porn addiction before the first day of work. You might be fired on the first day which is bad but the worst part of it is that you are fired because of watching porn. What will you tell people?
