The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving Kenya’s key trade and logistics routes as works continue on the Mombasa–Mariakani Highway Project, a major upgrade of the A8 corridor being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
In a statement, Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the project is transforming the Mombasa–Kwa Jomvu–Mariakani stretch into a modern dual carriageway designed to ease congestion, improve access to the Port of Mombasa and strengthen regional trade along the Northern Corridor.
“The project is designed to decongest Mombasa, improve access to the Port of Mombasa and strengthen regional trade along the Northern Corridor, which carries thousands of heavy trailers transporting cargo to and from the hinterland,” Omollo said.
The highway upgrade includes the construction of new bridges, footpaths, drainage systems and a range of road safety features. Works are being implemented in two sections, with Lot 1, covering 11.4 kilometres between Mombasa and Kwa Jomvu, already largely complete after being expanded into a four- to six-lane highway.
Lot 2, stretching 30.4 kilometres from Kwa Jomvu to Mariakani, is being developed as a durable dual carriageway designed to accommodate heavy traffic volumes, including large numbers of port-bound trucks and trailers.
Omollo noted that his department is playing a key support role during construction. “The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is supporting the project through traffic management coordination and stakeholder engagement with communities, transport operators, as well as enforcement of orderly movement along the corridor,” he said.
He added that these measures are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted cargo flow while minimizing disruptions to businesses and residents.
Once complete, the upgraded highway is expected to significantly boost efficiency at the Port of Mombasa and reinforce the corridor’s role as a vital trade and logistics artery for Kenya and the wider East and Central African region.
