Mount Kenya University (MKU) has signed a landmark MoU with the Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy, marking a major step forward in strengthening maritime education and training in Kenya.

The agreement is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of MKU’s Maritime Academy in Malindi as the demand for skilled maritime professionals continues to rise globally.

The MoU was signed by MKU Founder, Prof. Simon Gicharu, and Dr. Yasser Al Wahedi, President of Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy.

Kenya’s advantageous location along the Indian Ocean has long positioned it as a strategic maritime hub. Through the new partnership, MKU aims to reinforce its contribution to Kenya’s vision of unlocking the potential of the Blue Economy. The collaboration will facilitate knowledge exchange, curriculum development, and advanced training programs tailored for seafarers, engineers, and maritime specialists—areas where there is a worldwide shortage of trained personnel.

“This partnership underscores MKU’s commitment to providing world-class maritime education and positioning Kenya as a leader in the Blue Economy,” said Prof. Simon Gicharu, Chairman and Founder Mount Kenya University. “By working with Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy, we will equip our students with the skills and expertise required to thrive in the international maritime industry.”

Through the new partnership, MKU aims to reinforce its contribution to Kenya’s vision of unlocking the potential of the Blue Economy.

The MKU Maritime Academy in Malindi is strategically placed to serve both Kenyan and international students, offering specialized training aligned with global standards. The collaboration will further create avenues for joint research, faculty exchange, and internship placements, ensuring graduates are adequately prepared for industry demands.

Since its inception, the MKU Maritime Academy has trained many seafarers and has continuously expanded its programs—from offering the Basic STCW course to more advanced and competitive maritime courses.

The MoU aims to strengthen MKU’s capacity in maritime education through Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy’s support in curriculum development, knowledge transfer, and trainer development. It will also enable the joint design and delivery of industry-relevant courses in areas such as maritime studies, AI applications, and safety.

The agreement promotes collaborative research and innovation aligned with SDG 9, supports joint funding proposals and publications, and expands opportunities for students and faculty through internships, cadetships, exchanges, and industry engagement—ultimately enhancing MKU’s academic quality, industry relevance, and global competitiveness in the maritime sector.
