Mary Wambui Mungai has been appointed the new non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA).

This comes after President William Ruto revoked her previous role as the Chairperson of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK).

Her appointment to the water agency was confirmed in a Gazette notice dated Friday, August 8, signed by the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eric Murithi Mugaa.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 66 (1) (a) of the Water Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, appoints Mary Wambui Mungai to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Athi Water Works Development Agency as established vide Legal Notice No. 28 of 26th April 2019, for three years, with effect from the 8th August 2025,” the notice read.

Adding;

“The appointment of Charles Kamau Karondo is revoked.”

Mary Wambui Mungai had served as the CA board chair since December 2022, when she replaced Gilbert Kibe, who resigned from the post.

Mary Wambui Mungai is a prominent businesswoman and political figure, known for her close ties to the ruling administration.

During her tenure at CA, she oversaw key regulatory developments and provided leadership during a time of growing demand for digital access and innovation in Kenya’s communication sector.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto has appointed Charles Kamau Karondo as the new non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors at the Communications Authority of Kenya.

The announcement was also made through a Gazette notice dated August 8, 2025. Karondo’s appointment takes effect immediately and will last for three years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Charles Kamau Karondo to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority, for three years, with effect from 8th August 2025,” the notice signed by President Ruto read.

Adding;

“The appointment of Mary Wambui Mungai is revoked.”

Karondo brings extensive leadership and governance experience from both the public and private sectors. During his time as Chairperson of AWWDA, he oversaw several important projects, including the Northern Collector Tunnel system aimed at addressing Nairobi’s water shortages.

He also managed leadership changes at the agency, including the appointment of acting CEO Joseph Mungai Kamau.
