The M-Pesa Foundation has unveiled a Ksh 115 million investment to upgrade health, education and elder care services in Mombasa and Kilifi counties, targeting thousands of residents in need of improved public facilities.

In Mombasa’s Likoni Sub-County, the Foundation has started the construction of a Ksh 50 million maternal and newborn health centre at Likoni Sub-County Hospital. The new unit will include labour, delivery and recovery rooms, as well as antenatal and postnatal care areas.

Mombasa’s maternal mortality rate stands at more than 200 deaths per 100,000 live births, with leading causes including obstructed labour, haemorrhage and hypertension.

While speaking during the launch, M-Pesa Foundation Chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a said the investments are meant to give communities better access to essential services.

“M-Pesa Foundation’s purpose is to transform lives, and we do this through our key pillars of education, health and integrated livelihoods. We believe every Kenyan, regardless of one’s background or age, deserves access to secure, dignified, and supportive community spaces. With these investments, we continue to reiterate our commitment to improving lives and developing stronger, more resilient communities across the country,” he said.

In Mvita Sub-County, the Foundation is putting Ksh 30 million into renovating Alms House, also known as Nyumba ya Wazee, which currently hosts 39 elderly residents. The upgrades aim to give the seniors a safer and more comfortable living environment.

Kilifi County is also set to benefit. Gandini Primary and Junior School in Malindi Sub-County will receive new and refurbished infrastructure worth Ksh 35 million.

The project includes new classrooms, an ICT lab, a kitchen, a library, ablution blocks and water harvesting systems. Teachers say the improvements will help ease congestion and raise learning standards for the growing student population.

Gandini is one of the schools selected under the Citizens of the Future programme. Members of the public can nominate schools for support through the initiative’s website.

Local leaders have welcomed the investments, saying the upgrades come at a time when many public facilities are struggling with ageing structures and rising demand for services.
