Controversial political activist Tony Gachoka is set to make a big comeback to the media after landing a slot as a talk show host at Standard Group.

Business Today has learnt that Gachoka’s show will tentatively debut on February 13 after he put pen to paper.

The show, which will run on KTN and KTN News, will be broadcast weekly either as a recorded or live episode.

Gachoka is not new to TV having been a regular guest on Jeff Koinange’s JKL show when it used to air on KTN and it is believed the new show will take a similar format.

His new deal is a change of fortunes for Gachoka. His last appearance on JKL ended dramatically and there were reports he made it to the studio having taken one too many. He was subsequently banned from the show. Koinange has since moved the show to Citizen TV where he doubles as a host of Hot 96, which is also owned by Royal Media Services.

Gachoka gained fame in the late 1980s and 1990s when he was the publisher of Post on Sunday, which was known for its juicy exposes on the Moi regime.

In August 2001, he was jailed by the Court of Appeal for contempt. Ironically, Gachoka’s case was heard by three of the same judges whom he had allegedly scandalised in print by linking them to a local corruption case.

In June 2005, he spent the weekend at Industrial Area Prison after he and Koinange failed to pay Ksh 2 million after being found guilty for contempt of Court alongside Standard Group and KTN for defaming businessman Jimmy Wanjigi who had secured court orders barring them from doing so.

He was released by the High Court after he appealed.

Now, they will no longer appear on the same channel and it will be interesting to see how the competition will unfold.
