The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has appointed Mohamed Abdul M’maka as the new Commissioner for the Investigations and Enforcement Department, with effect from March 11, 2026.
The appointment was approved by the KRA Board after a competitive recruitment process aimed at strengthening the agency’s fight against tax evasion, financial crimes, smuggling, and illicit trade.
In a statement, KRA confirmed that the decision followed interviews held on March 11, 2026. The authority said the move is part of ongoing efforts to improve enforcement and boost revenue collection.
KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga announced the appointment and confirmed that it took effect immediately.
M’maka takes over from Levi Mukweso, who previously held the position.
According to KRA, the recruitment was conducted to enhance the agency’s capacity to combat tax fraud, financial crimes, and illegal trade across the country.
Background in intelligence and security
M’maka brings more than 21 years of experience in intelligence, security, and investigations. He has previously served as Chief Manager for Intelligence Coordination and Operations, as well as Chief Manager for Intelligence Exchange at KRA. Before his latest appointment, he was serving as Chief Manager for Intelligence Collection, a role he assumed in August 2025.
Before joining KRA, he worked as a Senior Intelligence Officer and Investigator at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC). He has also held security and intelligence roles at Kenya Power and Kenya Airways.
He is a former officer in the Kenya Defence Forces, where he served as a troop commander and field intelligence manager. M’maka holds a master’s degree in National Security and Strategy from the National Defence University–Kenya.
In his new position, M’maka will oversee investigations and enforcement operations targeting tax fraud, smuggling, revenue leakage, and other illegal activities affecting government revenue.
His appointment comes at a time when KRA is strengthening enforcement tools, including technology-driven systems and enhanced border controls, to improve compliance and protect national revenue.
The authority says the leadership change is expected to further support its efforts to ensure fairness in taxation while cracking down on those evading their obligations.
