Kenyan football has a new name to celebrate as 19-year-old attacking midfielder Aldrine Kibet has signed a four-year deal with La Liga club Celta Vigo.

The promising talent, who joins on a free transfer from Nastic Sports Academy, will begin his professional European football journey with Celta Fortuna, the club’s reserve side, with a contract running until 2029.

Kibet’s signing follows a rapid ascent from grassroots football in Kenya to the global stage. His standout performances at the 2023 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two games, where he was named Most Valuable Player with St. Anthony’s Boys in Kitale, first thrust him into the spotlight. His flair, speed, and goal-scoring prowess continued to shine at the 2023 CECAFA U18 Championships and later with Kenya’s U20 team, the Rising Stars, where he netted five goals to help secure a historic qualification for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2024.

Celta Fortuna hailed Kibet as a “young African talent” with “exceptional speed, ball skills, and scoring instinct” in a statement on their website.

The club sees the Kenyan international as a long-term investment, with the potential to progress from their reserve team to the senior squad in LaLiga’s Primera División.

Should he reach the Spanish top flight, Kibet would become only the third Kenyan to do so, following McDonald Mariga (Real Sociedad, 2011-12) and Michael Olunga (Girona, 2017-18).
