Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Board Chairperson Joy Masinde has commended the growing efforts by local motor dealers to promote the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) in the country, calling it a crucial step toward achieving a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Speaking during a test-drive event for the new BYD Shark 6 pickup truck, introduced in Kenya by Loxea Kenya, Ms Masinde praised the ongoing shift toward electric mobility, describing it as key to decarbonising Kenya’s energy and transport sectors.

“I enjoyed my drive on the BYD Shark 6 this morning, which has impressive road handling and mind-blowing features at a very competitive price,” she said.

“At Kenya Power, we are working very hard to power a sustainable future for Kenya through electric mobility, and the introduction of EVs and hybrid vehicles by firms such as Loxea Kenya fits perfectly into our strategy.”

The Kenya Power boss reiterated that the utility firm remains committed to supporting the rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the country.

She noted that the company’s long-term plan focuses on reducing carbon emissions by providing clean, affordable, and reliable power to drive Kenya’s e-mobility revolution.

“Our goal is to decarbonise the grid through a strategic commitment to climate action by enabling the electric mobility agenda,” Masinde said, adding that Kenya Power is investing in infrastructure that will make EV adoption easier for both urban and rural consumers.

Loxea Kenya, a subsidiary of CFAO Mobility Kenya, recently introduced the BYD Shark 6 pickup truck to the local market. The model has already sparked strong customer interest, thanks to its advanced plug-in hybrid technology, affordability, and powerful performance.

According to Loxea Kenya’s Country Manager, Ms Kinyoe, the introduction of the BYD range marks a major milestone in Kenya’s shift toward greener transportation.

“BYD vehicles are rapidly becoming the preferred choice for Kenyan consumers who demand innovative, reliable, and sustainable mobility solutions. At Loxea Kenya, we are proud to lead the country’s transition towards cleaner transportation by offering models like the BYD Shark 6 and Sealion 6, which provide cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology combined with affordability and performance,” she said.

The company’s other offering, the BYD Sealion 6 SUV, has also been well received in the Kenyan market. Meanwhile, the BYD Dolphin, the company’s most affordable model, has been hailed globally as a revolutionary innovation. TIME Magazine recently named it one of the best inventions of 2025.

Priced at Ksh 3.6 million locally, the BYD Dolphin is a compact hatchback with a 30kWh battery, 55kW motor, a range of 305 km, and a top speed of 130 km/h. It represents a practical, affordable entry point for Kenyans eager to join the electric mobility movement.
