As Kenya prepares to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), football fans are being urged to familiarise themselves with the strict security and safety measures in place — particularly the list of items that will not be allowed inside stadiums during the tournament.

According to tournament organisers, the goal is to ensure a safe, secure, and family-friendly environment for all attendees while delivering a world-class experience across all CHAN venues. A robust four-layer security system will be enforced at entry points, and all fans will undergo screening before being allowed into the stadium.

Below is the official list of banned items:

  1. Firearms – Any kind of gun or weapon is strictly banned.
  2. Fireworks and flares – These pose safety hazards and are not permitted.
  3. Whistles and loud sound devices – Including vuvuzelas, megaphones, and similar items that disrupt public order or safety.
  4. Glass and metal containers – Bottles, jars, or other breakable and potentially dangerous items are not allowed.
  5. Large backpacks – To ease screening and reduce obstruction, large bags are prohibited.
  6. Ladders and cooler boxes – Bulky items that may block movement or be misused are banned.
  7. Takeaway food and drinks – Fans must consume such items outside the venue.
  8. Political banners or offensive signs – Any messaging that may incite division or discomfort will be confiscated.
  9. Illegal substances – All forms of narcotics and unauthorised drugs are banned.
  10. Pets – Only certified service animals will be allowed; all other pets must stay at home.
  11. Electronic devices that interfere with stadium systems – This includes any gadgets that may affect Wi-Fi, broadcasting, or security infrastructure.

“If it explodes, offends, blocks, blasts or distracts — it stays outside,” read part of the guidance issued by tournament organisers.

What You CAN Bring

While safety rules are strict, fans are encouraged to come with items that enhance the stadium atmosphere and show their team spirit. These include:

  • Official match tickets (digital only — no paper tickets allowed)
  • Your national or team jersey
  • Flags and banners (non-offensive)
  • Mobile phones
  • Your friends, your singing voice, and your energy

Smooth Entry Experience

Organisers have promised a smooth and fan-friendly experience at stadium entrances. All tickets must be purchased online through the official CHAN ticketing portal, with payment via M-Pesa or card. Entry will be granted upon presenting SMS or email confirmation — no need for printing. Paper tickets will not be accepted.

Upon arrival, fans will go through:

  1. A general screening
  2. Digital ticket verification by trained stewards
  3. Security inspection
  4. Guidance to their assigned seating zone

A Celebration of Unity and Discipline

As East Africa comes together to host this historic football championship, organisers are calling on all fans to observe the stadium protocols.

“Fans are not just spectators — they are part of the team that makes CHAN unforgettable.”

With matches set to take place in top-tier stadiums across Nairobi and other cities, ensuring discipline, safety, and mutual respect in and around venues is key to making CHAN 2024 a resounding success.

So come ready to celebrate — but leave the banned items at home. Let’s keep the focus on football, unity, and pride as Africa comes home.
