President William Ruto has disbursed KSh 1 million to each member of the Harambee Stars. The payment, totaling KSh 27 million, fulfils a promise the Head of State made earlier this year to the national football team.

The confirmation was made on Monday by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed, who stated that all 27 players have received the funds.

“All 27 Harambee Stars players have received the KSh 1 million promised to them by President William Ruto,” Hussein Mohamed announced on social media. “Total disbursed: KSh 27 million.”

The money is seen as both a morale booster and a vote of confidence in the team, as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures, including the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

President Ruto had hosted the team for a breakfast meeting at State House earlier this year, where he promised the cash reward in recognition of their dedication and performance.

In his address, the President promised cash incentives for every match outcome, with the team set to receive KSh 1 million per player and official for every win, and KSh 500,000 for a draw. The President further announced tiered bonuses, with the team promised KSh 60 million if they qualify for the quarter-finals, KSh 70 million for reaching the semi-finals, and an eye-catching KSh 600 million should they lift the CHAN 2024 title.

“These rewards are not just about money,” said President Ruto. “They are about belief. We believe in you. Go out there and make Kenya proud.”

This latest move underscores the government’s growing emphasis on supporting sports and youth empowerment, with the president reiterating on several occasions that athletes should be adequately supported and rewarded for their service to the nation.

With the funds now in hand, focus turns to how the Harambee Stars will harness this momentum to deliver results on the field in upcoming matches.
