The Government of Kenya has reaffirmed its leadership in promoting peace in Africa following the successful signing of a peace agreement during the ongoing Sudanese peace talks held in Nairobi.

In a statement on Monday, February 24, 2025, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi said the peace discussions, which include Sudanese political parties, civil society, and military groups, represent a crucial step toward restoring stability to Sudan after years of conflict.

Mudavadi has expressed Kenya’s pride in hosting the peace talks, stressing that the country’s role as a peace broker is deeply ingrained in its history and foreign policy. From its independence, Kenya has maintained a robust commitment to peace-building, not just within the East African region, but across the entire African continent and globally.

“Kenya’s leadership in mediating regional conflicts has been a consistent feature of our foreign policy,” Mudavadi said.

“This tradition, which started with our founding Father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and has continued under every successive president, underscores our unwavering dedication to fostering peace.”

Kenya’s legacy as a peace champion can be traced back to the early years of independence. Notably, Mzee Kenyatta played a significant role in facilitating Angola’s independence talks in 1975. Over the years, subsequent presidents, including the late Mzee Daniel arap Moi, the late Mzee Mwai Kibaki, and President Uhuru Kenyatta, have all prioritized peace initiatives in their leadership.

During Moi’s tenure, Kenya was pivotal in peace negotiations across Africa, particularly in Mozambique, Somalia, and Sudan. One of his most notable achievements was mediating the Machakos Protocol in 2002, which helped end the Second Sudanese Civil War.

Under President Kibaki, Kenya continued this tradition by hosting the Somalia National Reconciliation Conference and facilitating the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005, which helped end the long-running Sudanese conflict.

President Uhuru Kenyatta continued Kenya’s role as a mediator, leading the Nairobi Process, which sought a peaceful resolution to conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Kenya’s current President William Ruto has further solidified the country’s position as a key player in peacebuilding. Under his leadership, Kenya has facilitated peace initiatives such as the Tumaini Peace Initiative for South Sudan and remains deeply engaged in efforts to stabilize the DRC. Additionally, Kenya is spearheading the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti, contributing hundreds of troops to restore order in the country.

“Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring peace in conflict-ridden regions such as Sudan, South Sudan, and the DRC,” said President Ruto.

“Our Foreign Policy underscores peace as one of the eight pillars that define Kenya’s role as a global leader in mediation and conflict resolution.”

Kenya’s dedication to peace extends beyond diplomatic efforts. The country has also contributed to more than 40 peacekeeping missions worldwide, from Sierra Leone and Liberia to Lebanon and South Sudan. Through these missions, Kenya has consistently played a pivotal role in stabilizing volatile regions and providing humanitarian aid.

As part of the ongoing peace talks in Sudan, Kenya continues to offer its platform for negotiations, with the aim of fostering a lasting resolution to the conflict. The peace agreement signed on February 23, 2025, marks another milestone in Kenya’s unbroken legacy of peacekeeping and mediation.

With this continued commitment to peace, Kenya stands as an unwavering pillar in Africa’s collective pursuit of stability, security, and development.
