The government is ramping up investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as part of efforts to build a skilled workforce capable of competing in both local and global labour markets, according to Raymond Omollo.
In a statement, Omollo said the expansion of TVET institutions reflects a deliberate strategy to position vocational training as a key driver of economic growth and employment.
“The Government is investing heavily in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to produce a skilled workforce for both the national and global labour markets,” he said.
He cited Kiharu Technical and Vocational College as a model institution demonstrating the progress being made in the sector. The college, located in Murang’a County, opened its doors to students in September 2023 and has quickly grown into a major training hub.
“Now just two years old, the institution has already enrolled over 1,800 students drawn from across the country; showcasing growing confidence in vocational training as a viable and competitive pathway,” Omollo noted.
The college offers a wide array of programmes designed to meet diverse industry needs. These include courses in Building and Construction, Business, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Cosmetology, Hospitality, and Liberal Studies.
To ensure quality training, the institution has been equipped with modern learning facilities. These include a fully functional ICT laboratory as well as well-established workshops for plumbing, mechanical and electrical practice, enabling students to gain hands-on, industry-relevant skills.
Omollo further revealed that the government is addressing student accommodation challenges through infrastructure development under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
“Complementing this, the government, through the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), is constructing a student hostel to meet accommodation needs, further enhancing access and retention for learners from different parts of the country,” he said.
He added that the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has played a key role in supporting the project’s implementation. This includes coordinating local administrative processes, ensuring compliance with security and regulatory standards, and facilitating the smooth delivery of infrastructure.
The developments, he said, are expected to benefit not only students but also the surrounding community, as the government continues to strengthen the TVET sector as a cornerstone of skills development and economic transformation.
