Gor Mahia was eliminated from the CAF Champions League after being beaten by Al Ahly of Egypt 6-0 on aggregate in a match played at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday evening.

The Kenya’s most successful club with a record 21 KPL titles was bundled out after shameful losses of 3-0 and 0-3 over two legs played at home in Nyayo Stadium on September 15, 2024, and away in Cairo yesterday.

Gor Mahia, or K’Ogalo for dïe-hards, were not even able to have a bit of fun before bidding farewell to the CAF Champions League. That is because they were eliminated in the first part of the competition, only playing two matches of the annual continental club football tournament, which features only top-division African teams by virtue of their domestic league placing.

But maybe they couldn’t win: They were playing Al Ahly FC, who have won more CAF Champions League titles than any other African club, totalling 12. Al Ahly are also the defending champions in the tournament.

So, it can be said that Leonardo Neiva’s side was already eliminated when the game began because starting three goals down, following the loss in the first leg, meant they needed at least a 4-0 win to advance to the competition’s group stages, which was almost impossible against the superior Al Ahly.

And even though they fought until the end, their efforts were futile as they conceded goals from Al Ahly players Rami Rabia and Wessam Abou Ali in the 23rd and 54th minutes, respectively, and the last from Taher Mohamed during extra time to end 0-3.

Gor Mahia joins Kenya Police FC, who were beaten by Zamalek SC on Friday by 2-1, in elimination from the tournament, and the profile of the Kenyan football scene is diminished totally in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2024–2025.

The two teams will have to reconcile themselves to a successful campaign in the FKF Premier League, where they have at least three games at hand after rescheduling due to CAF preparations.
