The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has unveiled 22 aspirants who will represent the party in the upcoming by-elections across various parts of the country.
Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, in Nairobi, DCP Deputy Party Leader, Cleophas Malala, said the unveiling marks a significant milestone for the party as it seeks to strengthen its presence on the national political scene.
He stressed that the party is committed to holding free and fair internal nominations that will involve all registered party members.
“On behalf of the party leader, I am glad to unveil the following candidates in the following jurisdictions. All party members will participate in the bi-elections,” Malala said.
He explained that the party is working to ensure that all its members are registered and ready to vote during the nominations.
“We are going to have free and fair elections; only party members will participate in the nominations. We will ensure all our members are registered so that they can nominate aspirants,” he added.
However, Malala took issue with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), accusing it of delaying the release of official dates for the by-elections.
“We urge the IEBC to live up to its promises. To date, IEBC has not given us the by-election date; please do so as promised,” he said.
He also alleged that the delay may be politically motivated, claiming that the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is not ready to face the elections.
“We urge the IEBC to lead by its words. The last time they addressed the press, they assured the nation that they are going to give us a date in a week. Up to today, IEBC has not given us a date for the byelections,” he stated.
Adding
“We are aware that the ruling party is trying to push the dates further because they are not ready, because they have done a survey and realised that out of the 22 by-elections, there is none that they can win.”
With all 22 DCP aspirants now officially unveiled, the party says it is fully prepared for the race and is urging the IEBC to set dates without further delay to ensure that voters can finally get the representation they deserve.
Upcoming by-elections
Among the most-watched races is the Kasipul Constituency by-election, triggered by the tragic death of MP Charles Were, who was assassinated in Nairobi on May 1, 2025.
In Banisa Constituency, Mandera County, the seat has remained vacant since March 25, 2023, when MP Kulow Maalim Hassan died in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident. Although the vacancy was declared in April 2023, a by-election has not been held due to the IEBC’s lack of commissioners at the time.
In Kilifi County’s Magarini Constituency, a by-election was ordered by the Supreme Court after it nullified the election of MP Harrison Kombe over serious electoral irregularities, including ballot stuffing and manipulation of results.
Another by-election is set to take place in Malava Constituency, Kakamega County, following the death of MP Malulu Injendi.
