Rigathi Gachagua is living in fear of intimidation, harassment, and surveillance as government authorities seek to prevent him from engaging with ‘sensitive’ or political issues while he is out of office, the former Deputy President shared in a series of accusatory posts on X today.

The ousted Deputy President, who was impeached in October mainly for abuse of power, corruptly using his influence in government to amass wealth and obstruction of government by gross misconduct, described being followed and watched at home by who he suspects to be police on behalf of President William Ruto’s administration.

“Security agents in unmarked cars have been following me wherever I go. They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, taking note of all my visitors, and they trail me whenever I leave the house, even all the way to my rural home in Nyeri,” Gachagua wrote on social media.

He went on to say that the stalkers’ behaviour is overtly threatening, and their persistence has made him fearful for his life and that of his family.

“In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions and disappearances by state agents, I felt it was important to share with Kenyans the harassment and intimidation I am experiencing. I want to inform them to hold the state accountable if I am harmed by state agents,” he continued.

“I request the state to leave me alone! You hounded me out of office, and you should now allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen,” the ex-DP added.

It is important to remember that immediately after his impeachment, Gachagua revealed at a news conference that two assassination attempts had been made on his life while he was still in office, following a severed relationship with his boss.

“Leave me alone, my brother, President William Ruto. I can’t believe you are the man I helped become president,” he lamented.

The former Deputy President was then summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to substantiate his claims, but the authorities have not yet provided an update on the matter.
