The government has unveiled the Field Marshal Muthoni Kirima Modern Market as a landmark project aimed at honouring Kenya’s liberation heroes while boosting livelihoods for traders, particularly women.
Speaking on the project, Interior PS Raymond Omollo said the market represents a fitting tribute to struggle icons through investments that uplift communities.
“How do we best honour our legends, and more so, our heroines, if not by creating lasting investments that uplift communities and empower generations?” he posed, adding that the facility “answers this call, bearing the name of a legendary freedom fighter while transforming the livelihoods of ordinary wananchi.”
Named after Muthoni Kirima, the market has been developed under the Kenya Urban Support Programme and is designed as a modern, integrated trading and transport hub.
The ultra-modern facility features more than 1,000 trading stalls, complemented by an open-air market, and a well-organised transport terminus with designated bays for matatus, buses, taxis and tuk-tuks.
It also includes passenger waiting areas, restaurants, sanitation facilities, water storage systems and a solid waste management unit. Enhanced security infrastructure such as lighting has been installed, alongside provisions for ICT access and connectivity.
According to Omollo, the project is expected to ease congestion in Nyeri Town’s central business district while promoting orderly trade and improving mobility.
“Designed to decongest the Nyeri CBD, the market is also fostering orderly trade, improving mobility and creating new economic opportunities for traders and service providers,” he said.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration will play a key role in managing the facility, ensuring safety and order within the traditionally chaotic trading and transport space.
Omollo noted that structured oversight would guarantee a secure and efficient environment for both traders and commuters, marking a shift towards more dignified and organised urban markets.
