Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has concluded a two-day visit to Kenya with a meeting at State House, Nairobi, where he held talks with President William Ruto on strengthening ties between the two nations.

The discussions centred on trade, investment, and regional cooperation within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

President Faye’s visit followed his appearance as the chief guest during Kenya’s Mashujaa Day celebrations held on Monday in Kitui County.

His attendance was seen as a show of solidarity with Kenyans at a time when the country is mourning the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

During the celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium, Faye joined thousands of Kenyans in honouring national heroes and used the occasion to deliver a message of condolence to the Odinga family and the Kenyan people.

“I take this opportunity to renew the heartfelt condolences of the people of Senegal to the brotherly people of Kenya on the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” he said.

“I express my deep compassion to President Ruto, to his family, and to the people of Kenya. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.

The Senegalese leader said he was honoured to join Kenya in commemorating its heroes, describing the invitation as a sign of strong friendship and mutual respect between the two countries.

He also spoke about the importance of celebrating African heroes and preserving their legacy through education and cultural remembrance.

“I am here for the duty of remembrance because our heroes deserve respect, honour, and admiration,” he said.

Adding;

“The sons and daughters of Africa must be celebrated because it is an educational tool for the transmission of our values.”

The Mashujaa Day ceremony carried the theme “Innovating for Africa’s Future,” reflecting on how African nations can use innovation and shared values to shape a stronger and more connected continent.

Mozambique’s Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levy also attended the national event. She joined Faye in paying tribute to Raila Odinga, describing him as a true nationalist whose influence will continue to be felt across generations.

On Tuesday, President Faye was received at the State House, where he and President Ruto explored opportunities to expand cooperation in key areas such as trade, technology, agriculture, and youth empowerment. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to building a stronger partnership between East and West Africa.
