At least seven people were killed in an accident involving six vehicles and a motorcycle early yesterday at Maltauro, Duka Moja area, along the Maai Mahiu-Narok Highway in Narok County, the police said.

Multiple people were also trapped in their vehicles by the crashes, which occurred just after 10 AM when a speeding trailer travelling from Narok town towards Maai Mahiu burst a tyre and slammed into a Toyota Premio vehicle, an ENA Coach bus, and a matatu, according to Acting Narok County Police Commander John Momanyi.

“Three passengers in the matatu were killed on the spot in the accident that occurred at Maltauro area between Duka Moja and Nairegia Enkare,” Officer Momanyi said.

A few minutes later, another trailer collided head-on with a Toyota Prado heading towards Narok, killing its two occupants instantly. The truck driver was not injured.

“The second trailer knocked down a motorcycle, killing two passengers at the scene,” the police commander stated.

The police did not release the victims’ names, pending notification of their families.

Over 20 injured people were taken to Narok County Referral Hospital, including five who were in critical condition, said a spokesman for E-Plus, an emergency services agency working with the Narok County Police and the Kenya Red Cross.

The accident caused heavy traffic on the highway for several hours as police worked to clear the mangled wreckage of the vehicles and the motorcycle.
