After a nearly 50-year screen and stage career, with two Oscars to his name, Denzel Washington isn’t concerned with the Academy Awards.

The actor, whose latest film, Highest 2 Lowest,  premieres Aug. 15 in theaters and Aug. 22 on Apple TV+, recently admitted he’s “not that interested in Oscars”

“I’ve been at this a long time, and there’s times when I’ve won, shouldn’t have won, didn’t win, should have won,” he said on Jake’s Takes. “Man gives the award, God gives the award. I’m not that interested in the Oscars. People say, ‘Well, where do you keep it?’ I say, ‘Next to the other one.’”

Washington added, “I’m not bragging. I’m just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, it ain’t going to do me a bit of good.”

The comment comes after Washington won Best Supporting Actor for Glory in 1990 and Best Actor for Training Day in 2002, in addition to nominations for Cry Freedom (1987), Malcolm X (1992), The Hurricane (1999), Flight (2012), Fences (2016), Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) and The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021).

A reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 Japanese film High and Low, Lee’s latest directorial outing stars Washington as a titan music mogul, widely known as having the “best ears in the business,” who is targeted with a life-or-death ransom plot. The film also stars A$AP Rocky, Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice and Wendell Pierce.

Lee said Washington has “been talking about retirement,” which could make this their final collaboration.
