The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced that it has begun comprehensive investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Cabinet Minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

Jirongo succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI confirmed that the crash occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2025, at Karai area, Naivasha. The accident involved Jirongo’s vehicle and a public service vehicle operated by Climax Company Limited.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on the night of 13th December 2025 at the Karai area along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway,” the DCI said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Jirongo’s car, registration number KCZ 305U, collided head-on with a Climax Company Ltd bus, registration number KCU 576A, at around 2:19 a.m. The impact pushed Jirongo’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of collision, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 metres away.

A combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory visited the scene to carry out examinations and secure key evidence. CCTV footage from the nearby Eagol Petrol Station was recovered and is being analysed.

According to the DCI, the footage shows that at 2:18 a.m., Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. Moments later, he exited the station and made a right turn, heading back towards Nairobi. At 2:19 a.m., the PSV bus collided with his vehicle.

Detectives have interviewed the PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. Githinji is out on cash bail pending further investigations into causing death by dangerous driving and is required to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for further action.

Investigators have also spoken to the night guard and fuel attendant at the petrol station, who provided their accounts of the events.

The forensic team is scheduled to revisit the scene for further analysis. The DCI is also examining Jirongo’s movements before the accident, including statements from individuals he interacted with during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

“Further analysis of the CCTV footage is underway, and additional statements will be recorded from passengers aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus and other witnesses. Upon completion, a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for perusal and advice,” the statement added.

The DCI expressed condolences to the family, friends, and relatives of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, assuring the public of its commitment to conducting thorough, impartial, and credible investigations in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law.
