Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died from severe injuries to his chest and abdomen, an autopsy conducted at Lee Funeral Home has confirmed.

The examination was overseen by family pathologist Dr Joseph Ndung’u and Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor. Dr Ndung’u described the injuries as extensive, affecting multiple parts of the body.

According to the report, Jirongo suffered two fractures on his right hand and multiple breaks in his lower limbs. His chest had been crushed, with several broken ribs, a perforated heart, and ruptured major vessels, which caused significant bleeding into the chest cavity.

The post-mortem also revealed crush injuries to the abdomen and liver, leading to internal bleeding, along with a complete transection of the spinal cord. “We formed the opinion that he died as a result of crush injuries to the chest and abdomen, and spinal injuries due to blunt force trauma,” Dr Ndung’u said.

The fatal injuries were sustained in a road traffic accident on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

Preliminary investigations show that Jirongo’s vehicle collided head-on with a public service vehicle (PSV) operated by Climax Company Limited.

The force of the crash pushed Jirongo’s car about 25 metres from the impact site, while the PSV stopped approximately 50 metres away. Authorities say the collision caused severe damage to both vehicles.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a full probe into the circumstances of the crash. A team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory visited the scene, collected evidence, and began analysing CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station.

The footage shows Jirongo’s vehicle entering the station shortly before the accident and leaving moments later.

The PSV driver was questioned and released on cash bail, with instructions to report back on December 22, 2025.

Investigators are also speaking to witnesses and examining the crash site further before the investigation file is forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for guidance.

Jirongo, a veteran politician and former Cabinet Minister, was a well-known figure in Kenyan politics. His sudden death has prompted calls for transparency and a thorough investigation into the accident.
