President William Ruto has appointed Charles Kamau Karondo as the new non-executive chairperson of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), replacing Mary Wambui Mungai.
The announcement was made through a gazette notice dated August 8, 2025. Karondo will serve a three-year term beginning immediately.
His appointment comes at a time when the authority is focused on advancing Kenya’s digital transformation and strengthening communication regulation across the country.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Charles Kamau Karondo to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority, for three (3) years, with effect from 8th August, 2025,” the notice signed by President Ruto read.
With this change, Mary Wambui Mungai has been removed from the position she has held since December 2022.
“The appointment of Mary Wambui Mungai is revoked,” the notice read.
President Ruto appointed Mungai on December 2, 2022, to replace Gilbert Kibe, who resigned.
Charles Kamau Karondo brings a wealth of experience in leadership, business, and governance. He has previously served in various senior roles within both the public and private sectors.
Previously, Charles Kamau Karondo served as the Board Chairperson of the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA). His appointment in that role began in July 2023 and lasted until this recent reassignment.

His appointment signals the government’s intention to align CAK’s leadership with the broader national goals of digitisation, innovation, and inclusive communication access.
