Even though the Roman Catholic Church, through its leader Pope Francis, approved a rule allowing the embrace and blessing of same-sex unions and even permitted gay men and lesbians to be ordained as members of the clergy, one Bishop John Oballa of Ngong Diocese is not supporting it.
While speaking during an education day at St Mary’s Secondary School in Narok County, Bishop Oballa rejected demands to normalise homosexuality in the community and society as LGBTQ, meaning lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer, contradicts God’s laws in the Bible.
“We should reject promoting or being recruited into the LGBTQ community because it is a bad practice contrary to the will of God. Instead, students should engage in productive business to shape their careers,” he said.
Further, the bishop advised the students to avoid bad company, especially that which will lead them to harmful habits like drugs and substance abuse:
“Reject drugs, as they are not healthy,” he told the students.
Also, he urged them to cultivate meaningful relationships that please God rather than the current, at their time, useless boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, which might lead to problems of early pregnancy and dropping out of school.
“There are three types of love: we give ourselves to others as God did when he gave his only son; self-centred love, which is the love that calculates what gain you get from the relationship; and pleasure-seeking love, which falls short of God’s will,” said Bishop Oballa.
